Thai: " Ngoh "
A sweet fruit in a hairy red rind ( fig. ). The flesh is white, succulent and has a large seed. They are widespread in all Southeast Asian countries, and Thai rambutans are grown particularly in the East and South.
In Thailand , there are two varieties of rambutan, a fruit with a thick and hairy outer skin. "Ngoh Rong Rian" has sweet, succulent flesh that clings to the seed, while the oval-shaped Si Chompoo, the "pink" rambutan, has crisp, white flesh that comes off the seed easily.
Rambutan orchards are commonly found in Chanthaburi and the provinces of the South.
Usage
- Eaten fresh.
- Make jam.
- Added in fruit salad and desserts.
- Medicinally, the fruit is astringent and is taken to relieve diarrhoea and dysentery. In Malaysia , the dried fruit rind is sold in drugstores and used in local medicine, The pericarp of rambutan contains tannin and saponin and is dried and used medicinally in Java.
- Rambutan roots, bark, and leaves have various uses in medicine and in the production of dyes.
Nutrition
Fresh rambutan contains a substantial amount of Vitamin C and B, minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus and fibre.High in potassium, various minerals and dietary fiber.
Storage
Rambutan should be stored in the refrigerator within 24 hours after harvest and can be stored for six days at 12°C before discoloration of the skin occurs. Exposure to higher or lower temperatures results in rapid loss of quality. Skin discolorations occur at 3 days at tropical room temperature (26°-30°C). Do not leave the fruits directly exposed to ambient air, because the hair and red rind will turn dark brown rapidly. Significant weight losses also occur the longer the rambutan is kept in storage, although these can be reduced by storing at lower temperatures and wrapping the fruit in sealed or perforated polyethylene bags (though storing fruit at or below 7°C causes chilling injury and a reduction in the eating quality of the fruit).
If cold storage facilities are available, the fruit should be pre-cooled at 13°C prior to packing. Rambutan should be packed loosely in a 22 x 31 x 9 cm cardboard box (strength of 175 lbs/in2), in uniform rows with the same size, color and maturity. Net weight of the box varies from 2 to 5 kg depending on importer requirements.
